Sustainable Design & Greenkeeping

As designer of The Classic, a Golf Digest 100 Greatest Public Golf Course, and as  long time  superintendent at Madden’s On Gull Lake, a premier 63-hole golf resort, I bring a unique perspective to the design/build/maintenance aspect of golf.

My purpose is twofold:

  • Design golf holes that are challenging yet pleasurable, aesthetic yet maintainable.

  • Consult agronomically with existing properties for the promotion of bent grass.

A golf hole that is challenging but lacks aesthetic appeal will not fully engage the golfer’s imagination. Conversely, a golf hole that is aesthetic and challenging but not maintainable will be doomed to failure.

Often a course’s original architectural features are satisfactory, but over time Poa annua has encroached the bent grass surfaces, resulting in less than acceptable playing conditions, expensive and disruptive maintenance practices, and poor winter and summer survival. I offer a protocol for bent grass management that restores it’s competitive edge with minimal course disruption resulting in improved playing surfaces and reduced costs.

My vision is to combine these design and maintenance criteria with affordable construction and sustainable maintenance practices developed and honed over 40 years experience. Minimal input for maximum impact- -that is my goal.

Whether you are ready for design changes breathing new life and excitement into your golf course,  or  sustainable maintenance practices improving playability and the bottom line. Scott Hoffmann Golf is ready to partner with you.
